Isn't it Ironic? Or is it?

Getting to work and finding that everyone in your office chose to wear blue today. Is that Ironic?

The bartender sending his customers off at closing time with the admonition, "Don't drink and drive." Is that Ironic?

More examples...

Comments:
I have been reminded since January 24, 2003 that most people do not understand the true meaning of the word "irony". For this discussion, I would like to wait to make my true comment until after my better half makes his comment, just so I do not get the "irony" lecture again.
To be on the safe side, I'm gonna go with no on the first one. That is coincidental. The second I will wait to comment on.

Its funny you mention the irony lecture because I received one of those also. The problem is I didn't care enough to remember what the big deal was. O'well

FUNNY. I don't remember irony being a subject of conversation in our home ever. Where do they get this stuff?

MamaJ- Your boys take things that they don't like in society, peel them apart until they are exposed, complain about them, then explain how they would then make things different. They are revolutionaries. They will change the world with their knowledge and opinions.
Or atleast drive their wives crazy. :-) ha ha

In case you're wondering, I've given that "lecture" as well. If you want a good overview of irony, check out the wikipedia article on it. Do not listen to the song by Alanis Morissette. I'm sure you've heard that lecture before. The article even has a funny little section on Alanis Morissette's song. It's worth reading just for that.

Yeah but how did they all hit on "irony" as a subject to be adddressed? Must have been a family conversation that I wasn't there for. I'm sure there were alot of those after the lights were out and they were all in their bunks chit chatting before they fell asleep. Wonder what else they talked about? Jared probably knows.

The blue shirts example is coincidental, however if that were to happen on St Patrick’s day, then it would be ironic.

The bartender example is ironic.

Us being adamant about the definition of ironic (actually it is the concept of irony that we defend since any arbitrary set of symbols could be used to communicate the idea), I believe, stems from a firm belief in Absolute Truth. There is truth and order in this universe and things work a lot better if everyone lives and thinks accordingly. And if you want to know what truth is, just ask me. I know.

I know no one has probably really heard me when I use the word Truth, but I like to use it as a name of God. I actually think it is my favorite way to think about God. He is the standard, the ruler, truth. I may not always like what I understand Truth to be, but Truth is truth regardless.

I think Truth just became my favorite name for God, too! Thanks!

Boys/Girls go to Jupiter to get more stupider.

that's a pretty stupid thing to say

If a boy said "Girls go to Jupiter to get more stupider." That would be ironic.

If a girl said "Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider." That would be coincidence.

Is the Jupiter-stupider thing something you guys used to talk about too?

What?

Let's explore that one.

You guys are crazy! But then why do I keep checking back here and reading everything you have to say??? Maybe I'm crazy? Is that Ironic???

I think "the pot calling the kettle black" (ie. Debby calling me wierd;)) is some sort of irony, isn't it?

I never said "wierd" Crazy yes...not wierd...although... :o)

hmmmm???? who said that?

Ok, It was me. I haven't got this blog thing down yet...

You're funny, Debby!
